Hesperian Foundation

David Werner initiated the Hesperian Foundation to sustain the “Mexico Projects”—Project Piaxtla and later PROJIMO. With the explosive success of Where There Is No Doctor, Hesperian developed a publishing mission which gave rise to a number of important primary health care books including Helping Health Workers Learn with Bill Bower and Disabled Village Children.

In 1994 the Hesperian Foundation shifted entirely to its publishing mission and is today a fully independent organization, while David Werner continued to focus his efforts on the Mexico Projects and bringing his perspective on primary health care, community-based rehabilitation, and disability rights to an international audience under the banner of HealthWrights.
